SWALK: a conversation with JULIA COLE MARCH 3rd, 11 am at High Seas, Low Planes @la Esquina KCMO

Maurizio Cattelan, A Perfect Day, 1999 SWALK (http://swalkkc.wordpress.com) was created to facilitate deep, intelligent, public conversations in and around Kansas City. The premise of SWALK is that engaging with others in continuing conversation is the foundation of a civil society, because this commitment demonstrates the most caring, co-creative capacities of humankind. Talking together, sharing opinions, listening, and discussing provocative, sometimes difficult ideas, are all ways to constantly grow as an individual – but they seem also to be essential practices for shaping a sustainable common future, in which our public relationships reflect the love we more easily feel for family and friends. The proposed topic for this discussion is “agency or being?”. This gathering will take advantage of the welcoming space created in High Seas Low Planes to think about ways of responding to and initiating change. Please connect with this invitation via the SWALK blog, and if you have suggestions for short readings on either of these “positions” please submit them there. The final reading choices, if any, will be sent out to all participants in mid February, to leave time for completing the reading before the gathering on March 3. There are strong arguments to be made for actively engaging in creative change, for imagining new futures and then leading or participating in large-scale actions to make these ideas take form as quickly and gracefully as possible. Does this commitment include resisting change as well, if this runs counter to one’s vision? How do we derive the moral certainty required to persist in the face of resistance? Is the passion of an “opponent” in a struggle for change of any value? Does the struggle itself engender more resistance and slow the process of change? In contrast, might there be persuasive value in a more responsive, local pattern of life, that relies on setting an example, modeling magnetic alternatives, practicing a peaceful attention to changing conditions and adopting adaptive personal strategies? Is resisting change futile? Is it better to deflect force or resistance by yielding to it and transforming the energy into something new? Is this a practical strategy for a contemporary world deep in many troubles? Is there time for depth any more? Might these ways of being interact, and provide a vital alternative to apathy or obedience? If so, what might such a hybrid look like in a model of personal and collective decision-making or governance? Please bring your thoughts and experiences, and let’s talk together!

Paul Rudy + Heidi Svoboda music collaboration integration

COME HEAR AND SEE PAUL RUDY AND HEIDI SVOBODA FEBRUARY 21ST TUESDAY EVENING FROM 6-9 PM: Paul Rudy has composed for orchestra, chamber music, electroacoustic, site-specific sound installations and sonic journeying, using sounds he has gathered spanning the globe. He is a Rome Prize (2010), Guggenheim (2008), Fulbright (1997) and Wurlitzer Foundation (2007 and 2009) Fellow. He teaches at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Recordings of his acclaimed “2012 Stories,” an ongoing CD series of exploratory sound journeys, are available on iTunes and at www.aucourantrecords.com. Heidi Svoboda is a gong artist based in Taos, New Mexico. She has studied The Way of the Gong with gong master Don Conreaux and sound healing with harmonics pioneer Jonathan Goldman. She is a licensed massage therapist and medical Qi gong practitioner. Svoboda has been practicing healing arts for 15 years.

+ Anyone may reserve use of the temple by e-mailing highseaslowplanes@gmail.com 3 days in advance of the intended date of use. Email your contact information, a brief description of the activity you will be conducting in the space, and any other relevant information.

+ For activities occurring during regular open hours (Friday, Saturday, and Sundays 12-6), the temple will remain open to the general public and accessible to all

+ All individuals entering and using the space do so at their own risk, and are exclusively responsible for their own safety in the space. All individuals will be required to sign a waiver prior to entering the space, indemnifying all other parties of liability for their activities in the space

+ For any activities involving sound other than the sound that is already part of the installation, you are responsible for providing your own sound equipment

+ The video components of the installation cannot be removed, nor can they be replaced by someone else's video for an activity or performance. The sound components of the installation may be turned down or off as desired

+ The custom seating included in the installation accommodates 28 people. This seating comprises of 20 mobile chair units on wheels and 2 large platform seating boulders. The chairs on wheels may be moved but the boulders must remain where they sit

+ You may use this seating and/or encourage your participants, students, etc. to bring a yoga mat or something else that is comfortable to sit on

+The installation space accommodates approximately 35 people at a time in a participatory, class-like atmosphere, and 50 in an observation atmosphere, where people sit or stand side by side

+no fire, burning of incense or herbs, or heavy oils are permitted in the installation area and/or anywhere within la Esquina out of respect and consideration for the curtains and the hanging sculpture

+this is a not-for-profit installation. No person or group conducting activities in High Seas Low Planes shall profit from their use of the space

+all proceeds from a class, sermon, performance, etc. shall be donated to a charity/non-profit designated by the party using the space at the time that it reserves us of the space. When reserving the space, remember to include information on the charity selected

+during regular gallery hours of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday 12-6pm, the space must remain free and open to the public, such that any charge for activities during those times must be voluntary

+if collecting donations for an activity of performance, it is strongly encouraged to advertise the charity benefitting from the event beforehand

+your event will be advertised on the HighSeasLowPlanes blog and through other channels as appropriate,

but you are strongly encouraged to promote it creatively by all means possible

To reserve the temporary temple, please e-mail highseaslowplanes@gmail.com 3 days in advance with your reservation information. We will confirm your reservation and post it on the calendar. Make sure to check back here to confirm that all info is correct. Not only will it be listed on the calendar below, but a brief post will be posted the week of the event reservation to inform patrons and congregants of the details. Anyone and everyone that follows the blog will receive notice of new events.

Charlotte Street Foundation is pleased to present High Seas, Low Planes, a multi-media installation by Kansas City based artist and Charlotte Street Visual Artist Award Fellow Ari Fish. High Sees Low Planes is intended to serve as a “temporary temple,” a sacred space for people of all kinds to congregate. Groups and individuals are invited and encouraged to use the space as they wish, including for such activities as a class, performance, sermon, meditation, spiritual practice, ritual, or conversation.

The installation will be comprised of multiple projections of computer generated color light schemes, projected from the four cardinal directions onto large swaths of poly-filament “clouds” and sewn vinyl forms suspended from the ceiling. Drawing on theories of color therapy and color psychology, the color projections will work together to induce energy, vitality, calmness, and relaxation. These effects will be furthered through white noise, subtle bell tones and low hums presented in surround sound. Visitors will be able to experience the installation from reclining positions on mobile scooters upholstered with comfort foam and fabric, or by resting on large, stationary boulder-shaped pillows.

The installation will be open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, 12-6pm and by appointment. Individuals and groups may reserve use of this space for activities and events during these hours, or may request use of the space at other times, to be accommodated whenever possible. Ari Fish is a 2006 graduate of Kansas City Art Institute and a 2010 Charlotte Street Visual Artist Award Fellow. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at Melissa Morgan Gallery, Palm Springs, CA; Tompkins Projects, New York; and at Kansas City area venues including Grand Arts, the H&R Block Artspace at Kansas City Art Institute; and Charlotte Street’s Urban Culture Project Space. She has designed costumes for internationally touring artists and musicians including Gossip, Harlem, Peaches, Chicks on Speed, SSION, Mark Southerland and Snuff Jazz, Tilly and the Wall, and Filip Noterdaeme of the Homeless Museum.
